The Threshold of the Law of the Background

 

Visual Artist, Painter, Designer, and Installation Artist, Damien Berrard anchors his work in a quest for absolute integrity.

His journey is one of an existence marked by the ANOMALY from the outset — born in the compartment of a Peugeot 404, the artist carries within him this initial gesture of deviation, this need for rupture and foundation outside the established framework.

 

An artist from the beginning, music and writing were his first expressions. These disciplines were radically channeled toward the pictorial gesture: their rhythmic and conceptual essence mutated and infused itself into the canvas. This transition culminated in a radical revelation that marked the voluntary and definitive interruption of all figurative and narrative practice.

Today, the entire body of work is dedicated to abstraction and the concept of OUTRE MONDE (The Otherworld), a space where discipline and concentration completely overcome the arbitrary. The act of creation is a constant tension between the improvisation of the gesture and the demand of the “Law of the Background.”

It is an uncompromising philosophical commitment, seeking to express, through the fusion of matter and light, the necessity of a raw and essential truth in art.

It is the background that dictates its law, through a structure established at the zero point, and which determines the final outcome and success of his work.
